On June 4, 2004 Newsday reported that Harbachan Singh, the Chairman of the Sikh American Friendship Foundation, was honored by New York City Comptroller William Thompson's office on May 19 with a 2004 South Asian Heritage Award for service to his community. A native of Malaysia, Singh is 65. He said that his focus is "to help South Asians, new Americans, Sikhs, in particular, to integrate into this society... So we try to tell them what their responsibilities are. My belief is that when in Rome, do as Romans do. If you have adopted this country as your home, then you must put your heart and soul right here. This is your country. And this is the message that I try to bring about."
