On August 13, 2006 Punjab Newsline reported, "Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib Jathedar Giani Tarlochan Singh has demanded that the government must bring out legislation to stop the education institutions from banning the wearing of religious symbols so crucial to Sikhs in these schools. While talking to media persons at Gurudwara Singh Sabha here Giani Tarlochan Singh said there was a dire need for such a legislation as the incidents of ban on the wearing of Sikh religious symbols were increasing day by day in the state, that had caused great resentment among the Sikhs. He said stringent punishment must be provided for the school authorities, who ban the wearing of Sikh religious symbols in the schools. He strongly condemned the alleged ban imposed by the authorities of two Christian schools in Hoshiarpur district on wearing of Turban and ‘Kara’(Iron Bangle) by Sikh students in the schools."
