On January 30, 2002, The San Antonio Express-News featured the story "O'Connor Stands by Singh" about a Sikh student who has received support from his school and classmates. The article profiled Simran Singh, captain of his high school soccer team, who has received stares, insults, and threats in the wake of September 11. The article quoted Singh, "'Because of my distinct appearance, I have to keep in mind that I'm representing my religion at all times. It's a hard thing to deal with, but yelling and fighting doesn't do any good.'" The article continued, "As much ire as Simran has been subjected to since Sept. 11, he also stressed that he's experienced at least as much goodwill. He praised his classmates and teachers for being understanding, and he said it's not uncommon for strangers to introduce themselves and ask how he's doing. 'That definitely makes you feel good,' Singh said."
