On October 27, 2003 Associated Press reported that "the largest city in North Carolina is the latest to get a worship hall for Sikhs. Many members of the Sikh families in the Charlotte region had been assembling in homes on weekends to sing hymns and read out of the Guru Granth Sahib, or holy book. Their closest gurdwara, or Sikh worship hall, was in Durham. The growing Sikh community considered having its own worship space for the past decade. About a year ago, Charlotte builder Sajjan Singh donated 17 acres and oversaw construction of the $1.3 million building. About 300 people celebrated the opening of the hall Sunday."
