Sikh Elected to Vernon Board of Education

On January 17, 2006 The News India-Times reported, "Amarjit Buttar was re-elected to a four-year term as a member of the Vernon Board of Education in Vernon, Connecticut on Nov. 8 2005. This is his fourth term on the board. He was one of four candidates - two Republicans and two Democrats - who contested the elections. With 2950 votes, Buttar said he was the [recipient of the most] democratic votes... and the only candidate from the party to be elected to the board this term. Buttar, a first generation Sikh immigrant who came to the U.S. to go to law school at the University of Michigan in 1965 was Chairman of the Board of Education from 1999-2001. He has been a resident of Vernon County for 28 years... Buttar was a delegate at the Democratic National Convention in Boston Mass. in July 2004. He has served as president of the New England Sikh Study Circle and as Chairman of the World Sikh Council, America region. Buttar is also a Justice of Peace in Connecticut."
