On April 21, 2006 BBC News reported, "An Asian detective who won a race discrimination case against the Metropolitan Police is taking his employers back to a tribunal. Gurpal Virdi, a Sikh detective sergeant, told an Asian radio station he still faced racism in the force. Mr Virdi won compensation and an apology in 2002, two years ago after being suspended for allegedly sending racist mail to colleagues. He returned after a tribunal found he had been discriminated against. The tribunal also found there was no evidence he sent racist mail to black and Asian officers and civilian staff where he was based in Ealing, west London. Mr Virdi told Sunrise Radio that his attempts to gain promotion in the force were blocked and claimed he was not allowed extra time for an examination despite having a cyst on his eye. 'The evidence that I have is that the Metropolitan Police is reluctant to move on, racism still exists and there are a lack of opportunities for people like me to move up the ranks,' he said."
