On March 21, 2004 The Times of India reported, "Serial entrepreneur Chirinjeev Kathuria has lost the Illinois Republican primaries for the US Senate to millionaire-turned-teacher Jack Ryan.   Barack Obama, a state legislator and former civil rights lawyer, won the Democratic nomination on Tuesday for the Senate seat being vacated by Peter Fitzgerald.   Even as the first round of results started streaming in an hour after polls closed for the primaries, Kathuria, a novice Republican candidate, had been trailing way behind the front runners in the eight-candidate race.   Kathuria, whose campaign stressed his ethnic roots and played on the theme of trying to broaden the Republican Party's base by bringing in more minorities, seems to have failed to make his message heard by the grass roots Republicans who went to vote on Tuesday to select the candidate they want to face off against a Democratic candidate in November."
