On January 12, 2003 The Seattle Times reported on "Seattle's Duoc Su Buddhist Temple, one of six nutrition program sites for Asian and Pacific Islander elders coordinated by Asian Counseling and Referral Services (ACRS)... The temple opened in 1996, but most of the congregation's elderly members would go home once services were done. For older generations who spoke mostly their native language, close to their origins but with few cultural outlets, something more was needed... Now the bright dining hall at Duoc Su bustles each Saturday with lively Vietnamese chatter over familiar, freshly cooked lunches of rice, noodles, tofu and Asian vegetables. In all, about 1,000 Asian seniors took advantage of the program's six sites last year, coming from North King County, Federal Way and beyond to enjoy an estimated 45,000 hot lunches."
