On December 4, 2003 the Trinity Mirror reported, "The MSP [Member of Scottish Parliament] for Central Scotland - which covers the whole of the Monklands district - was gobsmacked when she was told she couldn't wish people a Merry Christmas. Bosses at the Holyrood Parliament decided that such a greeting would offend people from different faiths like Islam and Buddhism who don't celebrate the festive holiday...[MSP Margaret Mitchell] said: 'I specifically requested on my order form that the main greeting inside the card said "Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" which to me is traditional. However, when the cards were printed, the main greeting inside said "Season Greetings" in English with the same message in Gaelic underneath"...The MSP said that she feels that since Scotland is a Christian country she should be able to wish people a Merry Christmas and reckons people of other faiths would understand."
