The largest Hindu temple in Scotland has been devastated by a fire, causing thousands of pounds’ worth of damage.

About 45 firefighters tackled the blaze at the Hindu Cultural Centre in the west end of Glasgow. .

The centre, on La Belle Place, was used as a place of worship by hundreds of Hindus every day and is expected to remain closed indefinitely. Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and Strathclyde Police have launched an investigation.

Andy McCafferty, group commander of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, said: “The firefighters did a brilliant job. The fire did break through the roof and spread both inside and out. They did great to stop the flames spreading to adjoining properties and managed to extinguish it quickly.
