Hindus in this resort-city (Miri), a minority group of only 2,000, will have their own place of worship soon.

The Sarawak government is considering an appeal by them for a piece of state land to build a Hindu temple within city limits.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam said the state was looking for and considering a suitable place for the temple. He said the state was concerned over their needs, no matter how small the group was. He said they hoped the project would materialise and the temple would have a unique character that would depict the multi-ethnic nature of the city.

“We hope the temple will be a city landmark and a tourist attraction,” he said when officiating at a Deepavali gathering organised by the Miri Indian Association.
