Despite the possible religious reason a dozen or so dead chickens were dumped on North Beach, Nueces County District Attorney Carlos Valdez said he may file animal cruelty charges against whoever left them there.

Corpus Christi Police and Animal Control departments spent part of their Saturday cleaning up the birds scattered along the beach with fruit and coins.

Officers said they believe it was part of a religious sacrifice practice of Santeria, a religion based in West Africa and brought here by slaves.
