A Riverside man Wednesday filed a lawsuit against the federal government, alleging he was denied citizenship because of his Muslim religion and Egyptian nationality.
Tarek Hamdi, 50, who has lived in the United States since 1977 and in Riverside County for five years, said he went through an unsuccessful nine-year ordeal to obtain citizenship.
Jennie Pasquarella, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, which is representing Hamdi, said other Muslims have faced similar discrimination.
