On September 3, 2004 The New York Times reported, "the Republicans used their convention to court deeply religious voters among two different, traditionally Democratic groups, Roman Catholics and Jews, by holding rallies for supporters of each faith yesterday... Although evangelical Protestants have become a core part of the Republican base over the last three decades, pollsters say traditionalists among all faiths are likely to support the Republicans' stance on social issues, if the party can speak to them on their own terms. In a close election, no minority is too small to pursue, not even the small Orthodox Jewish minority."
