On January 6, 2005 the Indo-Asian News Service reported, "In the aftermath of the killer tsunamis that have claimed some 155,000 lives across Asia, religious organisations of all hues and faiths have joined hands to contribute to a massive relief effort. Hindu, Christian, Muslim and Jewish outfits have put out appeals, raised funds and sent volunteers to work in the affected areas, upholding what they describe as the spirit of charity and service common to all faiths. Prayers have been held to instil strength and solace in the victims, numbering around 13,000 in India's southern and southeastern coasts after the attack of the Dec 26 tsunamis in the Indian Ocean."
