Religious leaders have called on the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) for the immediate resumption of the stalled Mindanao peace talks.
In a statement, the 75 members of the Bishops-Ulama Conference appealed to the both parties to pursue whatever possible means, the steps that would result in lasting peace for Mindanao.
The joint statement was signed by Monsignor Fernando Capalla, archbishop of Davao; Hilario Gomez Jr., bishop emeritus of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines; and Dr. Hamid Barra of the Ulama League of the Philippines. Ulamas are Muslim clerics.
“We appeal to let the peace talks between the GRP [Government of the Republic of the Philippines] and the MILF continue, in whatever level or means possible, and let peace panels be convened as soon as the situation allows it,” the group said.
