On March 3, 2003 the San Francisco Chronicle reported that "nearly 2,000 people gathered for an interfaith service [at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco,] calling for an end to the U.S. surge toward war... During the 1 1/2-hour Sunday afternoon service, more than a dozen religious leaders called for peace. Their sermons and speeches were interspersed with readings from passages of the Hindu, Hebrew, Buddhist, Christian and Sikh scriptures, and the Koran... A reading from the Koran -- from the prophet Mohammed -- summed up the feelings of many speakers who called on the nation to focus on solving the existing problems of humanity, instead of creating new ones by going to war."
