On February 16, 2003 St. Joseph News reported that "representatives from St. Joseph religious organizations gathered Saturday for a peace vigil sponsored by Mission St. Joseph... People of Catholic, Baptist, Christian, Jewish, Islamic and Mayan faiths were present at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church to pray for peace... A table in the hallway of the church held pamphlets with information on how to stop the war with Iraq and reasons not to invade. One idea from the Boulder Mennonite Church was to send President George W. Bush a half of a cup of uncooked rice in a plastic bag with a message attached: 'If your enemy is hungry, feed him. Romans 12:20. Please send this rice to the people of Iraq; do not attack them.'”
