And while the parole board is often their only source of earthly hope, the paths to spiritual enlightenment behind bars are many.
Inmates embrace everything from mainstream Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths to more obscure practices such as Wicca, Rastafarian or even Satanism.
For prison officials, accommodating such a potpourri of faiths is often a challenge that requires balancing individual needs with institutional order.
