On October 26, 2003 the Democrat and Chronicle NY reported that "at least one traditional part of Ramadan, helping those in need in Rochester, is extending through all the months of the lunar calendar. Each year Muslims pay zakat, usually 2.5 percent of their savings, to the needy, and many do so during Ramadan. 'It’s recommended that you give it then because you get more blessings then,' said Masood, who helps give food to the poor and sick all year long. She and others from the Islamic Center on Westfall Road in Brighton take phone calls from people who find themselves coming up short on groceries. With donated money, they buy food and deliver it. They don’t require referrals from agencies or any paperwork. They also gather coats in the winter to donate and are looking forward to 2005, when an expansion of the Islamic Center will create space for more charity work. 'We’ll have a big professional kitchen available where food could be cooked and distributed in the city,' said Muhammad Shafiq, imam at the center. The renovation also will provide room for interfaith activities and eventually a larger room for prayers and worship."
