On November 1, 2002 the Houston Chronicle reported that "this year, Ramadan is expected to begin Wednesday with the sighting of the new moon. In addition to the strict sunup-to-sundown fast, it brings with it fasting from sensual pleasures such as listening to music. But Ramadan also unites Muslim students, especially those far from home, as they gather for evening meals and form a surrogate family with classmates. The student association... at the University of Houston-Downtown... will provide a variety of meals over the month to please the various ethnic groups, from Arab to Pakistani to African, he said. Twice during Ramadan they will order Chinese food that conforms to Islamic dietary laws. Last year, they experimented with Mexican food and found it very popular."
