On October 5, 2005 The Gazette reported, "The Quebec government will not force private schools to accept the hijab, the head scarf worn by some Muslim women. Despite the Quebec Human Rights Commission's legal opinion to the contrary, it's up to each institution to apply the rule as it sees fit, Education Department spokesperson Stephane Gosselin was quoted in an interview yesterday. The controversy arose when Sara Asfour, 17, was told to remove her hijab at College Jean-Eudes in Rosemont. The commission said in June that religious schools admitting students from more than one faith must make reasonable efforts to accommodate all their pupils' beliefs."
