On July 29, 2005 The Tribune reported, "Unable to take AIDS awareness campaigns to the interiors of Punjab, the state government has decided to seek the support of religious organisations in spreading details about the virus and its fatal consequences. After much persuasion, Jathedar, Akal Takht Sahib, Mr Joginder Singh Vedanti, has committed full support of religious bodies in spreading awareness about AIDS in Punjab. Until now, religious leaders had been refraining from making any comments on issues related to sex and AIDS. But now there seems to be an awakening. At a high level meeting of the state government’s Health Department officials and Sikh religious leaders held recently in Amritsar, it was decided that joint camps should be held to provide a solid platform for discussion about AIDS and causes of its spread."
