On June 2, 2004 the Daily Southtown reported, "Opponents of a planned Orland Park mosque want village trustees to delay a final decision until after a non-binding referendum on the issue in November. An organized petition drive for a referendum has not yet begun, but mosque foes contend that trustees have not heeded the concerns of many residents who have attended two public meetings. The village board is scheduled to discuss, and possibly vote on, the mosque at its June 21 meeting... Opponents must collect about 1,750 signatures by Aug. 16 to place a referendum question on the Nov. 2 ballot, according to the Cook County clerk's office."
