On June 10, 2004 The Iowa Channel reported, " A new private elementary school will open in Des Moines in the fall, featuring Islamic teachings. Organizers said the New Horizons School, at the Islamic Center of Des Moines, 6201 Franklin Ave., will serve about 20 kindergartners through second-graders this fall. Board member Iqbal Kapadia said the school, which will be open to all students, will fill a void in the Muslim community. The New Horizons School's curricula will be similar to that of public schools, but students will also spend about an hour each day learning about the principles of Islam. The board member said the school will seek accreditation from the Iowa Department of Education."
