FRANKFORT --Gov. Ernie Fletcher's annual prayer breakfast yesterday featured more than one voice of faith.
The breakfast came under criticism last year from various religious leaders and others for lacking non-Christian voices.
At yesterday's gathering, which attracted several hundred people at the Frankfort Convention Center, the program included Rabbi Joseph Rapport of The Temple in Louisville, Father Steve Roberts of Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary in Lexington and Pastor Russell Awkard of New Zion Baptist Church in Louisville.
Fletcher, a former Primitive Baptist lay minister, said he suggested to breakfast organizers after last year's controversy that they invite interfaith leaders "but don't tell them what to say."
"We did reach out and ask Rabbi Rapport, who is a friend of mine, to come and offer a reading from the Old Testament," Fletcher said. "Last year's prayer breakfast was not an affront to different faiths and different traditions. But we took the suggestions from last year and made a few changes."
