The Bogue Homa Indian Reservation east of Sandersville on McFarland Road will host its second annual powwow Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Lyndell Nickey, a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, said this year’s powwow will have a different theme from last year’s.

“Last year we honored elders. This year we’re going to honor veterans. We’re honoring these people because they are sacred people,” Nickey said. “They’re like warriors. Even if they’re non-Indians, we honor them as warriors. Veterans are warriors to us, and our own warriors are warriors from the past.”

Nickey said there will be several different types of Native American dancers in full, traditional costume, including gore dancers who have kept the traditional style of dances alive despite persecution from settlers. The American Legion will also be involved with a flag ceremony.
