On April 9, 2005 The Times reported, "It was truly a global funeral. In the Asian evening, the European and African morning and the American small hours, tens of millions were glued to television screens — from giant ones in parks to tiny satellite receivers in China, where state broadcasters ignored it all...In France, Europe’s biggest Roman Catholic nation, thousands watched on screens in the square outside Notre Dame Cathedral. In the Philippines, Asia’s largest Catholic nation, 10,000 people gathered in Luneta Park in Manila. In Australia 14,000 packed the Adelaide cricket oval for a memorial service. In Calcutta a giant television screen was set up at the mission established by the late Mother Teresa. Across Asia, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs joined Catholics in services and prayers to honour a Pope who had reached out to other faiths. Despite the late hour, millions across Latin America, the United States and Canada kept vigil and, from Buenos Aires to Boston, Catholics attended special night services. In New York the Empire State Building dimmed its lights all night."
