On April 15, 2004 The Star ran an Associated Press article that reported, "Thailand's prime minister on Thursday had breakfast with Muslim leaders at a Buddhist temple to promote religious harmony in three southern provinces that have been wracked by violence blamed on Islamic separatists. Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra made a surprise visit to the south on Wednesday for talks with residents and officials, before spending the night at the Sampoachuew temple in Pattani province. In the morning, he sat under a pavilion with Muslim leaders for the breakfast, under tight security provided by about 500 policemen. 'The prime minister wants everyone to see that people from all religions can live in harmony,' government spokesman Jakrapob Penkair told The Associated Press."
