On January 22, 2004 The Muslim News ran an article from The Scotsman that reported, "A commitment to open Scotland’s first state school for Muslim children has come a step closer with the revelation that a council has included one in its future building plans. East Renfrewshire began informal discussions last year with parents and leaders of the Muslim community who are pressing for the establishment of a specialist school...Outlining its plans, the council said it is 'factoring in provisions for a Muslim school, if requested, needed and found to be viable, on a joint campus with a non-denominational primary school.'"
