MUMBAI: March 8 is here, and so is the euphoria associated with the International Women's Day. Amidst talks of the celebration of womanhood, an issue that has reached a stalemate in India is the implementation of a uniform civil code for its citizens.

Sixty years after independence, the uniform civil code enshrined in Article 44 of the Constitution, is still under Directive Principles. The likelihood of a common civil code in future seems desolate as even a discussion of the topic stirs up strong reactions.

"Perception of women and children has changed over the time. We don't need a uniform civil code. Media only wants to write about the biases. Personal laws are good enough. They have changed and are reforming continuously," fumes Flavia Agnes, feminist scholar and women's rights lawyer.

She further provides her solution to this issue, "List all the rights and say how common they are. Then ask whether a woman has the right."
