On May 24, 2005 The Detroit News reported, "we used to worry about Christmas decorations going up too early. But in suburban Troy, the mega-event may be National Day of Prayer 2006 -- the follow-up to this year's celebrated clash over religion and politics... Even as a person with pronounced tolerance-mongering tendencies, I recognize that the National Day of Prayer people have the right to freedom of speech, religion, and even hiring out the City Hall steps. I would even agree that that organizing under a misleadingly inclusive-sounding name ('National Day of Prayer') and then acting exclusionary are within the constitutional package. But [Wendee] Rex's action -- seeking retribution against the mayor and a city councilwoman -- on behalf of a group calling itself the Troy Committee to Protect Free Speech is an effort to quell honest attempts at debate, not to enhance them. Elected officials are expected to take stands on controversial issues. That idea is one of the underpinnings of our democracy."
