On August 25, 2004 the Visalia Times Delta reported, "like any time-honored festival, Obon is a celebration that brings people together... The annual event has its roots in Japanese Buddhism and will take place July 24 at the Visalia Buddhist [Temple]... Similar to the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, Obon is a chance to remember through celebration, rather than mourning, those who have passed on... Though Obon has its roots in Buddhism, people of all religious backgrounds are encouraged to participate."
