On June 9, 2004 The Sun News reported, "A Buddhist monk from Brunswick County, N.C., will be one of about 30 monks from the United States and Thailand leading an international ceremony Tuesday at the United Nations. Visakha Puja, which celebrates the birth of Buddha, his attainment of enlightenment and his death, is being recognized by the United Nations for the fourth year. Abbot Phrakru Buddamonpricha, of the Wat Carolina Buddhajakra Vanaram monastery on Midway Road near N.C. 211 in Brunswick County, is one of the highest-ranking Buddhist monks in the country and was invited to assist with Tuesday's ceremony by Thailand's ambassador to the United Nations. Thailand is this year's official host nation for the ceremony."
