Building work on what will be one of the largest Sikh temples in the UK is over budget and behind schedule.

Work began on the Gravesend site six years ago but it has now been revealed it may take two more years to finish.

The cost of the £9m gurdwara has also risen by £2m, which will have to be found by the local community in Kent.

Architect Teja Singh Biring said: "My milestone is 2008, but it most probably will slip to 2009... I think another six months or so won't matter."

Structural work on the temple was completed last summer, but the next stage of covering it with granite and marble has taken longer than expected.
