On December 14, 2004 The Porterville Recorder reported, "Porterville now has a Muslim place of worship. The Masjid Porterville mosque is open in a renovated church building at Cleveland Avenue and Third Street. For years, religious services were absent from the building, as its lower floor was used for commercial space and its sanctuary space left vacant. City Council members, on Nov. 16, granted a conditional use permit for the mosque... The congregation numbers around 25, drawing from a wide area."
