On March 22, 2004 the reported, "The participants in a Ukrainian egg-decorating workshop Sunday at East Jersey Old Towne Village believed it was an egg they were holding in their hands; little did they know it was the fate of the world. According to Ukrainian folk legend, as long as women continue to decorate eggs, the world will continue to exist. If the custom should cease, evil in the form of a vicious monster chained to a cliff will destroy the world. The more eggs -- or pysanky -- are made, the stronger the chain that keeps the monster chained to his cliff. That chain became incrementally stronger Sunday as eggs were crafted by about 23 participants in the workshop sponsored by the Folklife Program for New Jersey of the the Middlesex County Cultural Heritage Commission.
