New Jersey Sikh Community to Convert Former Supermarket into New Temple

On July 26, 2002 The Star-Ledger reported  that "a former supermarket may become the new home for the growing Sikh community in Middlesex County [New Jersey]... The growing Sikh community in Carteret travels up to 50 miles to find a place of worship, but that may change soon. A nonprofit group has announced plans to convert a former Acme supermarket... into a Sikh temple... An architect is working on design plans that include classrooms, a residence for the priest and other facilities... Hardyal Singh Johal, chairman of the board of directors of Dashmesh Darbar Inc... [said] the gurdwara is certainly needed in the area... He estimates 400 Sikh families live in Carteret."
