On March 25, 2003 The Associated Press reported that "although it will take time to determine if war in Iraq sparks an increase in bias crimes in New Jersey, a group of the state's religious and ethnic leaders is not waiting to find out... 'Whatever is happening on other shores, we need to be on guard here in New Jersey and throughout the U.S.,' said Shai Goldstein, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League. 'Any bias crime, by definition, is an attack on America...' Goldstein joined an interfaith coalition Tuesday for what he called a 'preventive press conference,' as opposed to a 'healing press conference' that might take place after a bias crime such as the shooting of Waqar Hasan, a Pakistani immigrant from New Jersey killed in Texas four days after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001."
