On January 29, 2004 The Houston Chronicle reported, "Quick-thinking neighbors early today helped prevent a fire from spreading at Buddhist temple off the Gulf Freeway. Workers at a nearby building notified members of the Guandi Temple at 2089 Milby of smoke coming from the main temple room at about 6 a.m. Houston Fire Department spokesman Jay Evans said the monks that reside at the temple responded by calling the fire department and attempting to fight the fire with a garden hose and fire extinguishers."
