On September 15, 2002 the Islamic Horizons reported that the Islamic Society of North America's Islam in America conference "was held in Chicago on July 5-7... The three day conference brought together scholars, researchers, and community workers and leaders to focus on issues ranging from the spread of Islam in American prisons to how Muslims should communicate with non-Muslims... 'The strength of America is in its diversity, and this diversity includes the Islamic component which is part of the American mainstream now.' So declared ISNA secretary general Dr. Sayyid M. Syeed while inaugurating the... conference."
