On March 21, 2004 The Journal Gazette reported, "American followers of Islam are forging an alliance against alcohol consumption with long-standing, Christian-based temperance groups. Strict observance of Islam forbids the consumption of alcohol. The same holds for the beliefs of many of the Christians at the annual meeting of the National Temperance and Prohibition Council, which met this month at the headquarters of the Islamic Society of North America... The Islamic Society, which represents more than 10,000 people and 300 Islamic organizations, became a member of the temperance council last year."
