NEW HARTFORD — Dr. Jameel Arastu of New Hartford says open communication can dispel misunderstandings between people of different faiths.
Arastu, a practicing Muslim who has met with the New Hartford First United Methodist Church's adult Sunday school class twice throughout the winter, attended an interfaith potluck meal Sunday afternoon at the church. About 30 people attended.
"I believe in discussion," Arastu said. "I would rather somebody ask me what I feel, rather than assume what I feel."
The Sunday school class has spent the last several months investigating what causes people to hate one other.
Chuck Caton, the leader of the Sunday school class, said Islam and Christianity share many basic principles.
