On March 1, 2004 The New York Times reported, "The 2004 election is a critical gauge of how the political sentiment of Muslims has evolved since the 2000 ballot. Muslim activists and leaders say their community has become more politically aware after wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and after a backlash many say they felt at work, on the street and at airports, in verbal taunts and physical attacks. They say unfair treatment and scrutiny of their community also sprang from the government, with the Bush administration's USA Patriot Act and immigration registration rules singling them out. " The article discusses the movement across America calling on Muslims to register to vote. Nine Islamic groups have formed a national task force intended to rally Muslims to register to vote before the 2004 presidential election.
