On March 17, 2004 The Kansas City Star reported, "Mahnaz M. Shabbir of Stilwell was honored by the YWCA of Greater Kansas City on Friday with its annual Hearts of Gold award... Shabbir, 44, received national attention in 2002 when she detailed her experiences as an American Muslim woman in an opinion piece for The Kansas City Star. She is the founder of Community Praying for Peace, an organization that promotes religious tolerance and is involved in organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America, Crescent Peace Society and the Heartland Muslim Council."
