An attack on a Muslim man in Cheltenham was racially motivated, police have said.

The 38-year-old man was walking along the Honeybourne Line in the Gloucestershire town on 5 July when he was approached by several white youths.

The youths shouted racial abuse at the man before forcing him to the side of the track and throwing beer into his face.

The man was left unhurt but shaken and distressed by the attack, police said.

Det Con Jeff Manners said: "This was a cowardly and unprovoked attack on a local Muslim man as he was returning from work.

"The group thought he was linked to terrorism purely by his visual appearance.

"By spraying him with alcohol and making him feel unclean is a serious insult to his faith."
