On July 9, 2005 The Telegraph reported, "The woods and upland pastures of eastern Bosnia look placid and pretty, more Swiss than Balkan. But it was here that some of the ugliest crimes of recent European history were committed. Yesterday a few hundred men and women set out along paths dappled with sunlight on a three-day trek to commemorate the nightmarish journey of the menfolk of Srebrenica as they fled the Serbs who had just conquered their town. Of the 15,000 who left about half never arrived. Along the route to safety they were ambushed and killed on the spot or captured and murdered in batches. In the 10 years since the massacre, Srebrenica has become a symbol of a particularly savage war. It is also a shameful reminder of the impotence of the international community which seemed to promise protection to the Muslims in the enclave then abandoned them."
