On July 20, 2006 Durham Region News reported, "The Muslim Welfare Home for Needy Women and Children in Whitby celebrated its 10th anniversary on July 20 by unveiling new renovations to its 33-bed shelter. More than $78,000 was provided through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's (CMHC) Shelter Enhancement Program to renovate the Whitby site, including upgrades to video surveillance, heating systems, windows, fencing and repairs to the kitchen and bedrooms. In the past 10 years, the Muslim Welfare Home for Needy Women and Children has helped more than 2,600 women in Durham. In 2005, it assisted 351 women and children alone. Sibtay Naqvi, CEO of the Muslim Welfare Home, which has additional locations in Scarborough and Mississauga, said the renovations in Whitby will help improve the quality of life for women and children seeking the shelter of abuse and violence... The Muslim Welfare Home has been providing short-term affordable housing for abused women and their children, regardless of faith, in the Greater Toronto Area since 1993."
