Senior Australian Muslim leader Dr Ameer Ali says it is time for the head cleric or Mufti of Australia to be either replaced or the position abolished altogether.

Dr Ali is the former chairman of the Prime Minister's Muslim Reference Group and current vice-president of the regional Islamic council of South-East Asia and the Pacific.

Melbourne-based Sheikh Fehmi Naji el-Imam, 79, was elected Mufti by the National Council of Imams last year, after the continued controversy that marked previous Mufti Sheikh Al-Hilali.

Dr Ali says Sheikh Fehmi has been too quiet on key issues, such as the case of Queensland Dr Mohamed Haneef and the federal election.
