On August 4, 2001, The New York Times reported that "a coalition of about 15 Muslim groups that had endorsed Public Advocate Mark Green for mayor and three other Democratic candidates for borough presidencies withdrew the endorsements...amid accusations that it had links to groups that support terrorism." At the time the endorsements were made, the Muslim coalition's leader tried to distance himself from the American Muslim Alliance, which "some believe is sympathetic to Islamic militant groups," and whose donation to Hillary Clinton's campaign last year was returned.
